“Silent Survivor” by Deborah Shlian, my new medical mystery/thriller, is officially out next Tuesday.

Today, I had a chance to speak at the Institute of Learning in Retirement (ILIR), at the Boca Raton Communuty Center.

A terrific group, comprised of mostly women, who are avid readers. We had a lively discussion about the writing process!

Everyone bought a book, which is great, since all profits from sales of “Silent Survivor” are going to charities that aid veterans with PTSD as well as organizations that help women survivors of sexual assault.

I’m looking forward to their reviews!

My newest novel wins First Place!

RPLA_1stPl_Badge17.png“Silent Survivor” by Deborah Shlian won First Place for the prestigious Royal Palm Literary Award in the unpublished thriller category. The award was announced at the Florida Writer’s Association’s annual conference. This year there were 431 submission.

Chinese music was our inspiration for “Rabbit in the Moon” thriller

We’ve been asked to think of who we’d like to see in the roles of the characters we’ve created in our novel, Rabbit in the Moon and in fact, we are working on that for a new website called My Book, The Movie. Frankly, with the exception of Lili, we didn’t focus as much on what film star should play what part.

Instead, we got our inspiration from Chinese music. As we were writing our book, we listened to Karen (Hua-Qi) Han’s gorgeous erhu (see picture above) playing

Karen happens to be a dear friend and some of the inspiration for our main character, Lili Quan, as well as the person to whom we dedicated our book. As Karen herself says, the 2000-year-old Chinese violin has a voice-like quality that evokes Eastern cultural traditions.

If a movie is made, we hope Karen will play (and perhaps compose) the music. She has been a featured musician in just about every Hollywood movie score that requires the erhu including The Joy Luck Club, The Last Emperor and Kung Fu Panda. Here’s a link to her playing the theme of that film:

Audiobook version of “Rabbit in the Moon” a winner

Just announced: the Audiobook version of “Rabbit in the Moon” produced by Spoken Word Inc and narrated by nationally honored radio talk show host, Barbara Whitesides, won Honorable Mention at this year’s SF Book Festival.  Congrats to them all!! This just adds to the many awards the international thriller has already won including the Gold Medal for the Florida Book Award.

Life expectancy rises in the US

Good news! Without Dr. Ni-Fu Cheng’s immortality elixir (Rabbit in the Moon)  average life expectancy in the US has hit another high, rising above 78 years,  according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At the same time, infant mortality has hit a record low of 6.42 deaths per 1000 live births which is almost a 3 percent drop from 2008. Boys born in 2009 can expect to at least until age 75.5 while girls will live to 80.5. Reasons for this increased longevity is felt to be a result of better medical treatment, improved vaccination rates and decreases in smoking.

UCF Book Festival 2010

Join us at the first UCF Book Festival. This inaugural event is being sponsored in association with the Morgridge International Reading Center at the University of Central Florida.

The 2010 UCF Book Festival will be held  April 16-17, 2010, at the UCF Arena in Orlando.

We will be on two panels – both in Psych 105  from 10:30 -11:20 am (Mysterious Women: Characters of Intrigue) and 11:45 -12:35 pm (Telling Stories- Adding to the Action). We’ll be talking about the novels we’ve written together including our Florida Book Award winning international thriller, Rabbit in the Moon. Deborah will also be talking about her newest thriller, “Dead Air+, co-written with her former UCLA colleague, Dr. Linda Reid.

There will be book signings after both panels. Hope to see you there!
